Directions: THE ORGANIZATION IS AMAZON
You will write an email pitch to a member of the media to persuade them to broadcast/print about your organization. Here are some specific instructions for the pitch:
Decide whether you are pitching a TV or print story.
Determine what ONE news station (local, regional, or national) you are pitching and who from that outlet (so what specific reporter/editor/etc.) you are pitching.
Identify a story idea that meets an objective your client has (re: raise funds, gain support/generate awareness, educate about an important issue, etc.). The story you choose to pitch should also be one that would be of interest to the media you’re pitching and the audience they reach.
Your submission should be in a Word document and include the following:
The media outlet and contact you are sending the pitch to
A compelling email subject line (remember, you are sending this via email)
An email pitch that includes no more than 125 words. The pitch should showcase your storytelling ability AND include specific parallels to your client (tell them why they should care, why it’s a good story, and who you can offer for interview. You should also think about the visual opportunities – for example, is there a site they can come photograph that aligns with the story?).
Refer to the “News/Fact Sheet/Pitching/Media Advisory” lecture for tips on the types of stories to pitch and how to pitch. For this pitch you are trying to land a softer news story versus a hard news story. A feature or human-interest story can be harder to achieve because it relies on your ability to:
Recognize when you have a compelling story.
Write a pitch that is persuasive and encourages that media outlet to see why the story is relevant and one they should consider in the immediate future.
Identify an appropriate media outlet and specific person to pitch the story to.
