Week 5 discussion prompt 2
Problem Statement: The use of artificial intelligence (AI), algorithms, and other tools to diagnose and treat patients is becoming more accepted. There has not been much research on how the use of these technologies could impact ethical decisions made when treating patients.
Reviews of Literature
A recent study by Abdo et al. In a study published in 2020, Abdo et al. examined the ethics of AI-based medical decision making. They found that these systems are capable of assisting clinical tasks including data analysis or diagnosis but also raises important ethical questions regarding human autonomy. Wong, (2019) also pointed out how AI tools cannot be immune from bias because of factors like data sampling or algorithmic designs which can result in inaccurate predictions. Finally, Brinkman et al. The authors of the 2018 paper argued for more rigorous oversight to ensure that decisions made by practitioners are ethically sound, even when using automated systems.
