Raising the minimum wage does not seem to be an effective way of addressing poverty. This would lead to increased costs for goods and services which will put further pressure on households with low incomes who already struggle to get by. It could have an adverse impact on business, which may be forced to increase prices or cut staff to stay profitable. This could lead to job loss for people at the low end of income. Evidence also suggests that employers may be more inclined to look for workers with higher skill sets and better productivity. People with lower qualifications or less experience will find it difficult to land a job. Ultimately, I think governments should be focusing their efforts on policies that help create stable jobs across various sectors while also providing support networks for those who are currently unemployed/underemployed as opposed to relying solely on increasing the minimum wage as a solution.
