A leader who possesses certain qualities is essential to the successful completion of every project. Hesselbein & Goldsmith (2009) state that desirable leadership traits include collaboration, innovation, communication and decision-making. This is especially important for the project that involves diverse professionals in healthcare. Team members will understand project objectives, deadlines and expectations if they are communicated effectively. Making decisions is essential to avoiding delays and ensuring that the project moves forward as planned. Collaboration encourages the team to work together and to exchange perspectives. This leads to better project results. In contrast, innovation promotes creative thinking and fresh ideas that are crucial for any project’s success.
In my experience as a project manager, and as a professional in healthcare, I have leadership skills that are aligned with the desired qualities for this project. As an example, my excellent communication skills allow me to communicate information in a clear and concise manner. A critical thinker myself, I’m able to assess information objectively in order to reach informed decisions. Additionally, collaboration is important to me, as it allows me to effectively work with different teams in order to reach common goals. I’m also innovative and can come up with creative solutions for complex problems.
In order to compare my leadership abilities with those of an influential healthcare leader I chose Dr. Anthony Fauci. He is the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Dr. Fauci is a great leader, and he excels in areas such as communication, decision-making, and collaboration. He communicates effectively and clearly to the public to increase awareness about health concerns. He also collaborates with healthcare professionals in order to create evidence-based guidelines and policies that will improve the public’s health. He is also a good decision maker, as reflected in his ability, during times of public health crisis, to give sound advice to the policymakers.
My role as a project leader would be to encourage collaboration between team members in order to meet the objectives of the project. To achieve this, I would use the transformational leadership model, which emphasizes collaboration, empowerment, and innovation (Avolio & Yammarino, 2013). The proposed project involves a team of diverse healthcare professionals, with different levels of expertise and experience. This leadership model would be ideal for this. The transformational leadership approach would allow me to empower the team through delegation of tasks and responsibilities, based on each member’s strengths and experience. Moreover, I will encourage my team to contribute their ideas and perspectives to foster innovation and creativity.
For effective collaboration between the professionals in the team, I will adopt several strategies. To begin with, I will create a project charter which outlines all the goals and timelines for the team, as well as their roles and expectations. It would be important for team members to understand their roles and responsibilities, and commit themselves to meeting the objectives of a project. Second, I’d encourage team meetings that provide regular updates about project progress. This would encourage communication, collaboration, as well as innovation, by encouraging team members’ perspectives and ideas. I will also recognize the contributions of team members to this project. Team members would be motivated by rewards and recognition, which will promote positive working conditions and improve project results.
