Scenario : I hired a friend to lead a small group of representatives from an online company selling clothing. They were all from different countries and had different ways of communicating with the customers. A friend of mine noticed that customers had a hard time understanding some accents, and that they got lower ratings. She needed to choose whether she should provide training to the team to improve communication skills, or hire new staff with better English language abilities.
This dilemma was whether to offer coaching to members of the team with accents or hire new members of the team with better language abilities.
Moral relativists from a subjective perspective. A moral relativist will argue that my friend’s approach to the problem is what she and her team believe. This relativist would say that there is no objective right or wrong answer to this dilemma, and that the decision should be based solely on my friend’s personal beliefs and values.
Cultural relativist view: A cultural relatist believes that it is important to appreciate and respect cultural differences among team members. This relativist would say that the team members’ accents are a reflection of their unique cultural backgrounds and should be accepted and celebrated, rather than criticized or penalized.
The cultural relativist view is the more correct one in this scenario. Both views have merits. It is important to understand and respect cultural differences in a multicultural team and to avoid imposing one culture’s norms and values on another. It is reasonable to provide coaching for team members who want to improve their language abilities, as long as it’s done with respect and cultural awareness.
Justification for the moral decision: My friend chose to offer coaching to team members who had accents after consulting them and ensuring that they agreed with her approach. She also made an effort to celebrate the team members’ cultural backgrounds and encourage their unique contributions to the team. Her moral justification was that providing coaching was necessary to improve the team’s overall performance and to help the team members achieve their full potential, while still respecting their cultural differences.
Moral correctness Her approach was morally right as she showed respect for cultural diversity in the team and addressed the need to improve communication skills. She also sought the team members’ input, demonstrating a willingness to listen and consider their perspectives.
There is no objective morality in this case. The best approach will depend on the context and cultural background of those involved, as well as their personal views. To make fair decisions, you must consider all the members of your team, individually and collectively.
