To support computer-based interaction between a home care RN, the pharmacy and home health agency as well, it is necessary to establish certain messaging standards and scenarios. First, both the RN (and either pharmacy or agency) must have secure internet access in order to communicate via a web platform like email or instant message. This ensures that any confidential information will not be accessible to third parties. It is also important that specific data protection protocols are developed to ensure only authorised personnel have access to patient records and other sensitive documents.
Communication scenarios should include different messages (e.g. prescriptions that need refilling, updates on patients) between the RN, and both parties. It will ensure that each message has all the relevant information required to process it properly, while also providing a structure for streamlined responses. Finaly, setting up standards and guidelines for acceptable language will reduce miscommunications. These elements will create a framework that allows computer-based interaction to be conducted safely and efficiently in this transitional period from the traditional method of healthcare delivery.
