It is essential that nurse practitioners have multiple assessment types available to them when assessing patients. Additional assessment data include laboratory tests, imaging studies, such as radiographs and CT scans. Laboratory tests can provide further insight into many aspects of the patient’s health including organ function and inflammation levels. Imaging tests can help diagnose conditions like tumors and fractures. They also allow you to assess abnormalities that are not visible with a simple physical examination.

Nurse practitioners can also use psychological assessments to gather useful data. They include tests for anxiety, depression, eating disorders, drug abuse, cognitive function, and other issues. These assessments identify mental health problems that may need attention to improve overall health.

Functional medical testing such as vitamin levels and heavy metal toxicity measures can also offer valuable insight into a patient’s state of wellness beyond what is available through routine lab workup alone. Genetic testing can reveal a patient’s predisposition to specific illnesses, and help develop prevention strategies.

Last but certainly not least, nurses must remember that self-assessment is an important part of the equation when gathering data about a given individual’s condition – this could involve collecting information about symptoms experienced by the patient prior to arrival or throughout their journey with care providers; obtaining input from family members when appropriate; having conversations around functional capacity goals; discussing current treatment plans; evaluating lifestyle choices (e.g., nutrition habits); understanding insurance coverage limitations; recording advance directives/treatment preferences; inquiring about social support networks etcetera. These components create an overall picture which helps to guide decisions about diagnosis and treatment.
