Nursing role & scope – week 11 – informatics in professional nursing
My role as a nurse in protecting the privacy and security of patient data is to advocate on their behalf. It is important to follow all protocol related to the secure storage of information and its access, as well as be aware of potential risks when sharing sensitive data (e.g., telling someone your medical history via phone or email). In addition, I need to ensure that all disclosures and authorizations adhere to relevant laws, such as HIPAA, while adhering ethical standards established by professional associations (e.g. the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics). Moreover, I need to be knowledgeable about common cyber threats as well as ways that they can be prevented such using strong passwords or two-factor authentication.
I also have to educate patients about the importance of protecting personal health information. For instance, if a patient calls asking for copies of their medical records it is important to discuss any potential risks associated with having these documents in possession and provide advice about how best keep them safe & sound (e.g., password-protected online storage). Finally, part of my responsibility is reporting any violations or suspicious activity related to confidentiality so that appropriate action can be taken in order preserve patient’s rights and ensure they receive quality care at all times.
