I. What health problems are you facing?
- The LGBT community is affected by a serious mental health problem. Mental health includes anxiety, depression and stress.
II. Who are the most at-risk groups?
- LGBT people who have been subjected to discrimination, harassment, or stigma because of their sexual orientation.
III. What social/behavioral/health system determinants affect this?
- Social determinants of mental health for the LGBT population include discrimination, harassment, and stigma. Lack of culturally-competent mental health services and unsupportive parents, as well as low self-esteem, can all contribute to the mental health issues in the LGBT communities.
IV. Identify at least two potential interventions/activities the community, community health agency, community health nurse could offer to prevent and or support this health issue

- Support groups can promote mental well-being by allowing LGBT individuals to share their experiences with other people who are going through the same experiences.

- Mental Health Campaigns: Nurses and community health agencies can collaborate to develop mental health campaigns that target the LGBT population to raise awareness about mental health.
V. What resistance might be met in implementing the intervention/activity?
- Mental health interventions can be met with resistance from people who do not believe in the seriousness of mental disorders or who think that getting help is weak. Resistance may come from people who don’t understand the specific challenges facing the LGBT communities or those with negative attitudes towards the LGBT population.
LGBT Health Issues: HIV/AIDS
I. What health problems are you facing?
- HIV/AIDS affects the LGBT community in a major way. HIV/AIDS is a significant health issue for the LGBT community.
II. Who are the most at-risk groups?
- In the LGBT community, gay men and bisexuals are at the highest risk for HIV/AIDS.
III. What social/behavioral/health system determinants affect this?
- The main social determinants of HIV/AIDS in the LGBT community are stigma, discrimination and lack of culturally appropriate health care. Risky sexual behaviours and drug usage can also lead to HIV/AIDS spread in the LGBT population.
IV. Identify at least two potential interventions/activities the community, community health agency, community health nurse could offer to prevent and or support this health issue

- HIV/AIDS Education and Awareness Campaigns: Nurses and community health agencies can collaborate to develop HIV/AIDS awareness and education campaigns targeted towards the LGBT Community.

- HIV/AIDS Testing and Care: Nurses and community health agencies can increase the access of LGBT people to HIV/AIDS tests and care, particularly for those at greater risk.
V. What resistance might be met in implementing the intervention/activity?
- HIV/AIDS interventions can be met with opposition from those that hold negative opinions about LGBT people or do not fully understand the challenges LGBT people face. Resistance may come from people who don’t think HIV/AIDS is a serious issue or who are unwilling to seek medical treatment for HIV/AIDS.
