Fashionism, and Post-Fashionism were coined as terms by Anne Hollander in order to describe two distinct approaches to the fashion world. Hollander describes fashionism as a tradition that values aesthetics in clothing. Fashion is seen by Hollander to be an art. The focus of this view is on the expression of individual style via clothing and can often lead to trends or trendy looks. Conversely, Post-Fashionism sees fashion as more than just aesthetically pleasing garments but rather an avenue for self-expression and communication—a way to make a statement about one’s identity or beliefs. It also tends to take a more critical look at society’s obsession with material goods and consumption. Both perspectives have a unique perspective of how we see our relationship to clothing, as well as the impact it has on our culture and lives.
