Health advocacy involves promoting access to health care for people, communities and entire populations. The activities of advocacy include awareness-raising and education as well as community organizing, litigation, lobbying, etc. This paper aims to present a comprehensive package of information on a specific health issue, which includes a report summary, a response and an evaluation. For this health paper, the topic chosen is childhood vaccinations. This paper examines the effect of childhood vaccines in the community, the identification of needs, the research that supports them, and how to present information for support or changing perspectives. The paper will also discuss the role of communication and setting priorities in advocacy and the usefulness of informative/explanatory writing as a communication tool for advocates.

Part I: How to Put it Together

Step 1: Assemble. Assemble

Module 1 contains a summary of the report on childhood vaccinations. This report gives an overview, highlighting the importance of childhood vaccines and the dangers of not vaccinating. It also explains the history of vaccinations. Module 2 presents the solution to this issue, which focuses on vaccine hesitancy as well as promoting vaccinations. Childhood vaccinations have a significant impact on local communities. Childhood vaccinations have been an effective public health measure that has contributed to the reduction of several infectious diseases like measles and mumps. The vaccinations have prevented serious complications, hospitalizations and even deaths. Children’s vaccinations contributed in local communities to a high level of immunity. Immunity protects those individuals that are vulnerable and cannot be immunized due to medical conditions, like infants or elderly people. Children’s vaccinations are also helping to control outbreaks of disease that can be prevented by vaccines and reduce costs of health care associated with infectious illnesses.

Advocacy is not complete without identifying the needs of your audience, finding relevant research and then presenting it to them in a way that will either support their perspective or help change it. The process includes several steps including a needs analysis, identification of key stakeholders, review relevant literature and development of a concise and clear message.

It is crucial to include key stakeholders in the identification of needs. These could be community members, health care providers and policymakers. This will ensure the advocacy effort is relevant, acceptable and feasible. The process of conducting a needs analysis also allows for the identification of gaps and challenges, including vaccine hesitation, barriers in accessing vaccines and barriers to communication.

Research is an important part of advocacy. Examining literature helps identify effective evidence-based interventions and strategies that promote vaccination and reduce vaccine hesitation. A literature review can help to identify possible barriers and facilitators of vaccination, and provide the basis for creating an effective vaccine message.
