Diverse stakeholders have addressed the problem of antimicrobial resistance, including government and international organisations. This effort has largely been focused on measures designed to reduce both the misuse and overuse of antibiotics for human and animal healthcare. In the United States, for instance, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) has implemented guidelines to help healthcare providers make better prescribing decisions while also educating patients about proper antibiotic use. World Health Organization policies aim to decrease inappropriate use of antibiotics in agriculture by encouraging good livestock production methods such as hygiene and biosecurity. In addition, there are numerous initiatives around the world to research new ways of fighting infections resistant to drugs or finding better treatments.
Many individuals, in addition to the official steps taken by government bodies and other organizations, have also done their part to raise awareness of this issue via media campaigns and grassroots advocacy. In order to raise public awareness of how resistance to antibiotics occurs, and what steps can be taken to stop it from happening, activists want to encourage a collaborative effort to protect one our most precious medicines that fight disease-causing bacteria.
