What are the health indicators and concerns for a teen or woman who is the victim of sexual exploitation?

There are many health issues and indicators that a woman or teen who has been victimized by sexual exploitation may face. Sexually transmitted disease (STDs), unwanted pregnancy, traumatic injury, chronic pain and gastrointestinal problems are among the most common health concerns reported by victims. In addition, malnutrition may be experienced by victims who lack adequate nutrition and/or access to food. It’s also possible that survivors will experience psychological long-term effects, including anxiety and depression.

Health concerns related to sex trade can vary depending on the context. If exploitation occurs in an area with a high drug usage rate, there is a greater risk that users will share needles and contract infectious diseases like HIV/AIDS or hepatitis C. Violence can pose significant threats to victims. This includes the perpetrators as well as anyone else involved, such as recruiters or customers.

There is also the possibility that victims of trafficking may experience social isolation because they fear judgement or stigma. These fears can prevent them from seeking medical attention and support needed to recover. It is also important to note that certain forms of exploitation, such as trafficking in labor, can lead to financial difficulties because victims often do not receive proper compensation or are denied their wages.
