Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs describes a five-tiered structure which explains how humans fulfill their various needs in order to reach higher levels of personal growth and development. These needs start from the most basic physical requirements such as food, water and shelter up to the highest level of self-actualization or what Maslow calls ‘growth needs’. The individual can now identify his or her potential and develop positive traits to help him/her achieve their goals, no matter how many obstacles they face.
The need for growth is important in the formation of personality, as it provides individuals with motivation and direction needed to grow personally. The growth needs also provide the chance for intellectual and spiritual development, allowing individuals to take advantage of any situation that may arise under certain circumstances. Having goals and objectives in place also helps to ensure that you remain on task no matter what happens, ultimately leading to a successful outcome.
