This assignment aims to analyze and compare the presidential agendas for the two most recent and current U.S. presidents in relation to the public health issue selected by the student. This assignment has three sections:
Part 1: Agenda Comparison Grid
Using an Agenda Comparison Grid Template students can compare administrative agendas from the current administration and the previous two in regards to the concern of public health they have selected. Students must identify and describe the concern for population health and its factors. By Day 3 of week 1, a draft of part 1 must be posted on the Module 1 Discussion Board.
Part 2: Agenda Comparison Grid Analysis
Students will use the data recorded in the Agenda Comparison Template Part 1, to complete Part 2 of the template: Agenda Comparison Analysis. Students will identify the administrative agency responsible for addressing the selected healthcare issue, discuss how the issue might get on the agenda for the current and two previous presidents and who would be the entrepreneur/champion/sponsor of the healthcare issue for each presidential administration.
The third part: A Fact Sheet or a Talking Points Summary
The students should use feedback from their colleagues on the Module 1 Discussion Board in order to modify Part 1 of the Agenda Comparison Grid. Using the information recorded in Parts 1 and 2, students will develop a 1-page Fact Sheet or Talking Points Brief that could be used to communicate with a policymaker/legislator or a member of their staff for the healthcare issue selected. The Fact Sheet, or Talking Points Brief, should explain why the issue of healthcare is so important that it should be put on the agenda in legislation and the nurse’s role in setting the agenda.
Students will be able to enhance their skills of research, communication and analysis in the context of public health and policies.
