Comparison of Advanced Practice Nursing: a Study of two APNs

The purpose of this paper is to examine the practices of two APNs in various specialties. A primary care nurse specialist (PCNP), and a certified midwife (CNM) were the APNs who took part in this study. This study took place in-person, with data from interviews analyzed for similarities and differences. In the study, it was found that APNs choose their specialty based on their own personal preferences and beliefs. Also, they work in different environments, which impacts their daily schedules. In addition, the level of satisfaction between APNs with their respective roles in the health care system varied. The PCNP was certified by the American Association of Nurse-Practitioners, while the CNM had a certificate from the American College of Nurse-Midwives. PCNPs had prescribing authority, and were able to prescribe drugs from Schedules II-V. CNMs did not. APNs’ relationships with physicians vary. The PCNP practices under a supervision agreement, while the CNM has a collaborative arrangement. The APNs of both organizations were given privileges and credentials, and they were also members of organizations that addressed APN concerns. CNMs worked in hospital settings and a typical day for them included attending births and providing prenatal and obstetrical care.
3. Satisfaction Level with Role and Systems: The PCNP is highly satisfied with her role as PCNP, and also with the system of healthcare where she works. CNMs were satisfied with their roles, but they had concerns about the system in which they worked.
4. Type of APN certification: PCNPs hold certifications from the American Association of Nurse Practitioners while CNMs have certifications from the American College of Nurse-Midwives.
