The final project for this course is a case study that you will select, analyze, and report on using the IRAC (issue, rule, application, conclusion) format. Review the description of the final project in the Final Project Guidelines and Rubric document. Visit the selected resources or other sources for locating reported case law. Think about the kind of case you would like to analyze. Create a journal entry outlining your preliminary thoughts for the project. What type of provider (hospital, nursing home, doctor, dentist, etc.) will be involved in your case? What kind of fact pattern are you looking for? Do you want to explore a local case or a nationally publicized story? Where will you find your case? What research have you done so far? What kinds of questions do you want to answer? Select a medical case involving any healthcare provider. This could be a hospital or nursing home. It can also involve a doctor, dentist, nurse, etc. This case must involve an issue of law relating to healthcare such as informed consent, malpractice, privacy or medical ethics.

If you are selecting a situation, look for one that contains a pattern of facts which is complex and intriguing. It will provide you with more material for your report. Your interests will determine whether you choose to explore a case that is local or one that has been widely publicized.

Searching legal databases, such as LexisNexis Westlaw and HeinOnline, is a good place to start. These databases give you access to case law, other legal materials and news articles. Search for articles in academic journals or news publications that address healthcare legal issues.

You can use IRAC to organize and summarize your analysis once you’ve found the case. You can use this format to organize your thoughts, and then present them in an organized and concise way.

You can ask yourself the following questions: What is the ethical and legal context of the situation? What is the applicable law and regulation? What could be the possible consequences to the provider of healthcare? What can we learn from this case?
