Over the centuries, pharmacology has evolved and used many methods to prepare medications. Initially, medicines were prepared by apothecaries who mixed various ingredients together in order to create remedies for specific ailments which could then be sold directly to customers – this was known as the “apothecary method”. This method was mostly based on trial and errors as it involved mixing herbs, roots, or other substances to create remedies for specific ailments.
We now use more advanced forms of medicine that follow standardized protocols with exact doses. The medication can take the form of tablets, capsules, syrups, or suspensions. It all depends on what’s needed to treat a specific condition. Prescriptions are required for any medication that contains controlled substances, such as opioids. However, there are some exceptions. For example OTC cough medicine may contain codeine and not need a prescription because of the low dosage.
