Many respondents felt that it was crucial to provide psychological support for suicidal patients, even though they had not received specific training in this area or did not have regular access mental health professionals. Determining the best way to reduce suicide risks was also a priority for participants. They believed providing information regarding resources available and ways to avoid further crises is essential. But there still are gaps of knowledge among nurses about these resources. All participants felt confident administering CPR or AED during an emergency, but they were not well-prepared to recognize warning signs.
Overall these findings suggest that more emphasis needs to be placed on educating hospitals’ nursing staff on best practices when dealing with suicidal individuals and ensuring they have access to appropriate resources when needed. It is recommended that doctors and nurses improve communication regarding patient care to better identify those who are at risk so they can provide appropriate interventions quickly.
