Title VIII Nursing Workforce Reauthorization Act of 2019. This law was passed at the federal government level in response to nurse advocacy and signed into legislation on December 27, 2018. This law reauthorized funding from the federal government for workforce development and nursing education. It also included advanced nursing training, diversity in the workforce, and geriatric nurse education.
In addition, the legislation addressed nursing shortages and the need for additional nurses through funding programs for workforce development in nursing, as well as loan repayment and scholarships programs. It also supported advanced nursing education. This bill includes provisions for better data collection on nursing workers and improved research to inform efforts to develop a workforce.
The passage of the legislation is a major achievement for the nurse advocate, because it addresses critical issues that face the nursing workforce. These include the shortage of qualified nurses, increased diversity and the demand for nurses who have advanced training and education.
In order to continue advocating for this topic, it is necessary to take additional steps to make sure that funding and resources allocated by legislation are used effectively to meet the most urgent workforce development needs. It may involve ongoing monitoring and evaluations of nursing programs, workforce development initiatives and advocacy for more funding.
Nurses and nursing organizations can also continue to advocate for policies and programs that support the nursing workforce, including efforts to improve working conditions, address burnout and turnover, and promote the full utilization of nurses’ skills and expertise. It may be necessary to work with employers and policymakers in order to implement programs and policies that promote patient-centered, high-quality care.
