The components of professional nursing described in Chapter 1 of Leddy & Pepper’s Conceptual Bases of Professional Nursing (8th ed.) Included are knowledge, values, and skills. To provide high-quality care, nurses must have the necessary knowledge. They also need to stay up to date on new developments in healthcare. It is essential that nurses are able to communicate effectively and understand the pathologies of patients and their treatments, as well as be able to share information with co-workers and other professionals. Nurses need to have the skills to effectively apply their knowledge and to provide competent care, such as administering medication safely or using physical assessment techniques. Professional nursing is a profession that values are a part of. They guide the way nannies treat their patients, as well as interact with other members in the health care community. Examples include respect, integrity, advocacy, justice, empathy, emotional intelligence etc… All three components work together in unison allowing nurses to foster relationships with those they serve while delivering proper care that meets the standards set forth by their profession.
