The Instructional Unit on Wound Management: Education of Patients, Families, and Employees
Objectives of Instruction:
- Patient Education: Patients will learn how to care for wounds and the benefits of doing so.
- Family Education: Patients’ family members will understand how important wound care is in healing the wound and preventing infection. They will also be better equipped to help the patient with proper wound-care techniques.
- Staff Development: To provide quality wound care, healthcare professionals will need to be trained in proper wound-care techniques. They also must understand the wound management principles.
Behavioural Objectives
Patient Education:
- With verbal instructions, and after a demo the patient is able to show 100% accuracy when it comes to wound cleansing.
- With verbal instructions, and with a demonstration the patient is able to recognize the symptoms and signs of a wound infection. They can then report these to the health care provider.
- After reading and discussing the written material, patients will understand the need to keep the wounds clean and dry in order to facilitate healing.
Families Education
- After verbal instruction and demonstrations, family members can assist patients in wound cleaning techniques that are 100% accurate.
- The family member will learn to recognize the symptoms of a wound infection by verbal demonstration and instructions. They can then report these to their healthcare provider.
- The family will understand the benefits of a dry and clean wound for healing if they are given written material and have a discussion.
Staff Development
- The healthcare staff can demonstrate 100% accurate wound cleaning techniques after a demonstration and presentation.
- After a discussion and presentation, healthcare professionals will be better able to recognize the signs and symptoms associated with wound infections and take appropriate measures.
- The healthcare staff can explain to the patients the management of wounds by presenting and discussing the topic.
