Nursing informatics is a field of nursing that is continuously growing and evolving in the United States. Nursing informatics is the bridge between nursing knowledge and technology. Nurses work around the clock taking care of patients and are at the bedside to identify any patient care issues that may arise. The introduction of new technology into the healthcare system, such as electronic health records (EHRs), brings additional nursing problems, such as the loss of the art of caring (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018). Nursing informatics is relatively new within the organization that I work. The interactions I have noted between nurses and the informatics staff are not endearing as a feeling of overwhelmingness takes over with the addition of new processes regarding technology.

It is my belief that nursing informatics should be integrated in the healthcare system to improve patient care, and also support the work done by nurses. It is important that informatics and nursing work together to make sure the technology meets both the needs and requirements of nurses and patients. Moreover, the use of technology should not interfere with the practice of nursing or patient-centered care.

It is essential that the informatics and nursing staff communicate clearly in order to integrate nursing informatics effectively into the healthcare system. Informatics must know the concerns and needs of nursing staff and nursing staff should be included in decision making when selecting technology.

It is also important that the nurses are trained and educated on the latest technology so they can use it with ease. It will improve the care of patients and overcome initial resistance in the nursing profession to adopting technology.

Nursing informatics can improve the patient experience and the nurse’s work, but its implementation must be done in a manner that is sensitive to the concerns and needs of both the staff and the patients. Communication and education can ensure technology does not detract from patient care and nursing.
