COVID-19 has made a major impact on healthcare in the United States. The COVID-19 outbreak brought to light the lack of nurses and other healthcare professionals. A shortage of nursing professionals can cause burnout, unhappiness at work and problems with patient care. The national issue in healthcare is the nursing shortage, and its impact on my workplace. The healthcare organization’s response to the nursing shortage and the changes implemented to address the issue is also discussed.
Nurse Shortage in the Workplace and its Impact
According to American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2021), nursing shortages in the United States are expected to get worse in coming years because of the increasing demand for health care services and an ageing nursing workforce. COVID-19 has increased demand for nurses, further adversing the nursing shortage. Nursing shortages can affect the quality of patient care and increase workloads for nurses. They may also lead to job satisfaction and burnout.
My work environment has been affected by the nursing shortage in many ways. It has had difficulty retaining and recruiting nurses. Burnout and dissatisfaction with the job have been caused by increased work load for nurses. Travel nurses were also hired to help fill in the gaps, increasing the costs of healthcare. A nursing shortage also forced the organization to hire travel nurses to help fill gaps.
Healthcare Organization’s Response
To address this issue, healthcare organizations have implemented a number of changes. Technology was used to increase the efficiency of health care. This organization implemented electronic records that have increased communication and reduced workloads for nurses. Telehealth services have also been implemented by the organization, reducing the need for personal visits as well as the work load of nurses.
The organization is also implementing programs for recruiting and retaining nurses. The organization offers nurses who are interested in furthering their education competitive salaries and signing bonuses. They also offer tuition reimbursement. This organization also has a residency program for nurses to support them and provide mentorship.

Nursing shortages have affected my workplace by increasing workload for nurses and leading to burnout. To address the nursing crisis, my organization made changes that improved the quality of care and recruited and retained nurses.
