Introduce yourself
It is essential to develop your own personal philosophy in advanced nursing practice. This requires reflection and consideration of the principles, values and beliefs that drive the profession. A dynamic, complex and challenging field, advanced practice nursing demands a solid foundation of nursing metaparadigms concepts, such as the person, nursing health and environment. The IOM Future of Nursing Report and concepts like accountability, interprofessional collaboration practice, social injustice, and professionalism are also important in forming my philosophy of advanced nursing.
Metaparadigm Concepts
Person/client: The nursing profession is focused on the client, whose needs are met by individualized nursing care. Person is seen as holistic, including physical, social and emotional dimensions. The client is an active participant in his/her care, and the nurse’s role is to empower the person to make informed decisions and achieve optimal health outcomes.
Nursing is a combination of art and science, based on a holistic view. The profession of nursing is one that fosters a human connection. Nursing’s goal is to prevent and treat illness and promote good health by using evidence-based practices, therapeutic communication, and critical thinking.
The state of health is dynamic and encompasses mental, physical, emotional and spiritual aspects. Health is an individual and subjective notion that’s influenced by social and environmental factors. The nurse’s role is to promote health, prevent illness, and manage disease in collaboration with the person and the interprofessional team.
Environment is the context of the person’s physical, social and cultural surroundings. It has a significant impact on the person’s health and well-being, and it is the nurse’s role to assess and address environmental factors that affect the person’s health outcomes.
Addition Concepts
Accountability: The advanced practice nurse is responsible for providing safe, evidence-based, high quality care. It requires transparency, honesty, and responsibility for one’s actions and decisions. Advanced practice nurses are accountable to their patients, interprofessional teams, society, and the profession.
The term Interprofessional Collaboration Practice refers to the practice of collaborating between healthcare professionals in different fields, with the aim of optimizing health outcomes. Effective communication is required, as well as mutual respect and shared decisions among members of the team. The advanced practice nursing is an important member of the team, and has a vital role to play in coordination and management.
Social Justice: This is the promotion and protection of justice, equity, respect, and fairness for everyone, regardless their gender, race, ethnicity sexual orientation or socioeconomic standing. The advanced practice nurse has a responsibility to advocate for the person’s rights and needs and address social determinants of health that contribute to health disparities.
Nursing professionalism is the display of competency, integrity and ethical conduct. Continuous learning, reflection, and dedication to advancement are all part of it. It is the advanced practice nurse’s responsibility to be a model of nursing, upholding standards and maintaining values.
