Homework help for nursing students: Interprofessional communication| Nursing homework help
Choose one communication strategy or skill that was used by a member of your health care team to improve communication.
During the patient conference, the nurse practitioner used active listening skills to understand the patient’s concerns and to elicit information from the other team members. For instance, when the social worker spoke about the patient’s need for housing assistance, the nurse practitioner restated the information and asked follow-up questions to ensure that she understood the social worker’s points clearly.

Find an example of how communication and collaboration can be hindered.
The lack of clarity in the role and responsibility of members of the team can be a major barrier to collaboration and effective communication. As an example, it appeared that the occupational therapist was unsure of what her role is in the team. This led to little contribution from the OT during the conference with the patients.

What could you have done to improve communication during the patient conference?
Clarifying the roles and responsibilities for each member of the team at the beginning of this conference would have improved communication. The team members would then be able to contribute more effectively to the meeting if everyone was aware of what they were expected to do.

What are your thoughts on interprofessional collaboration? What is an example?
The nursing students at my school and the clinical instructors work together in a collaborative environment. In the case of patient care conference, for instance, both the students and the instructors collaborate to plan care plans. Students share their ideas, information, and feedback with other students. Clinical instructors also provide guidance and feedback in order to help improve critical thinking.
