The elderly, particularly those with chronic illnesses, low income, and minorities. These people are at greater risk for poorer health due to factors including limited access to healthcare and social isolation.
My specialty as a geriatric nursing practitioner can help promote health and prevent disease in the elderly. My specialty allows me to provide comprehensive screenings and assessments that identify risks and chronic diseases, as well as promote healthy behavior. I can collaborate with community resources and other healthcare professionals to deliver coordinated, culturally-sensitive care.
Understanding health equity in relation to this population requires a global perspective and consideration of issues of diversity. The unique challenges and needs of diverse cultural and ethnic communities must be recognized, along with the influence of social factors such as poverty, access to resources, and education. By adopting a global view, I am able to identify innovative care approaches and best practices that will improve the health of elderly people and decrease disparities.
