African Americans have disproportionately high rates of heart disease. African American adults in the United States have higher heart diseases rates according to CDC data. There are many factors that may have contributed to the disparity, including poverty, limited healthcare access, lack preventive care and exposure to toxins or air pollution (CDC, 2019). In addition, genetic factors need to be considered, as some genes could put African Americans in a higher risk group for certain heart conditions, like hypertension. This puts them at a four-fold greater chance than whites of becoming hypertensive during later life.

To reduce the prevalence of this disease amongst minority groups, society must recognize that there are inherent inequalities. They should then create pathways to allow people access proper treatment and diagnosis. It is important to raise awareness of the importance of preventative health care measures, implement programs that provide access to medical treatment for all people regardless their socio-economic background and stress lifestyle choices on how they affect health. Through collaboration between non-profit and government groups, we hope to reduce disparities in the population.
