Week1 research class | Nursing homework help
It is true that I’ve had an experience where evidence-based studies had a major impact on my patients care, which led to policy changes. The issue involved was related to opioid prescriptions—specifically the amount dispensed upon initial prescription. According to a Center for Disease Control and Prevention study, individuals who receive higher doses (more that 50 MME of opioids) are more prone to addiction and/or overdose. We developed new policies to restrict doctors’ prescribing medication above the prescribed dosage.
We developed the policy to help minimize any potential harms associated with opioids, while still giving patients adequate access to pain relief. It required doctors to explain why increased dosages would be beneficial towards individual cases—and if approved, they must also provide regular follow ups throughout treatment duration. In addition, pharmacists are now required to provide comprehensive education for patients regarding storage and disposal methods.
This policy has allowed us better manage our patients’ needs while holding ourselves accountable so that we can continue providing quality care.
