- The governor’s policy of providing long-term care services for all citizens in the state may not work due to the following reasons:
a. Affordability. While the Governor has proposed to create a state sponsored long-term care plan, this may be too expensive for some elderly people, especially those on low incomes. In addition, making LTC insurance mandatory for young and older citizens may lead to financial hardships for those that cannot afford it.
b. Implementation. It may take significant resources to implement a compulsory insurance plan for every citizen. The implementation of such a policy could be difficult, especially for the older population that may resist change.
Shortage of healthcare providers: It is possible that the state does not have enough providers to handle an increased demand for services in long-term care. It may result in longer waiting times, less access to healthcare, and ultimately a lower quality of care.
d. Quality of care: The governor’s policy places restrictions on the use of nursing home and assisted living services in favor of community-based services. But community-based care may not provide the exact same standard of care that nursing homes or assisted living facilities do. There may also be difficulties in assuring the safety and quality of community-based care.
