Use of off-label medications for mood disorders in children
It is only in specific circumstances that off-label medications for mood disorders can be prescribed to children. This includes when the other options have not been explored and/or when it has been determined that its risks are outweighed by potential benefits. A qualified physician with experience in prescribing such drugs should also conduct an in-depth risk assessment prior to any off-label medication being prescribed for children. Furthermore, any use of off-label medications must include ongoing monitoring of the patient’s safety and response to treatment. Finally, health care providers should consider other factors such as the toddler’s age, their overall health status, family history, and lifestyle when making decisions about whether or not to prescribe psychotropic medications.
