Health care informatics – Informatics No. 1
A nurse plays an essential role as a member of an interdisciplinary healthcare team. She is also a critical contributor to improving the care of patients. The nurses work with the technologists in order to provide patients with appropriate treatment and intervention. It is necessary to discuss diagnosis, medications and lab results with each patient in order for them to decide the best possible course of treatment. When making treatment decisions, nurses also consider social factors like financial resources and cultural beliefs.
The nurses are actively involved with educating colleagues about evidence-based guidelines. In order to do so, they engage in regular communication with members of the inter-disciplinary team. They also provide them with research results that are relevant for patient care. This collaboration allows nurses to help technologists decide on treatments which will benefit patients the most while minimising risks and side effects. In addition, many nurses initiate or participate in quality improvement projects that allow them to determine areas of the healthcare system where they can improve. This leads to better outcomes for all patients.
