Hsieh and colleagues conducted a study that is a good example of a semi-experimental design. The 2016 study examined the impact of a program to improve knowledge, attitudes and self-efficacy in relation to falls management among nursing students. A rise in falls in older adults over the past few years prompted health care providers and researchers to conduct this study. The researchers hypothesized, that by having nursing student participate in educational sessions related to fall management and increase self-efficacy, they would be able to improve knowledge about falls as well as attitudes towards them.

The survey used for this study measured participants’ pre-intervention and post-intervention scores on knowledge, attitude and self-efficacy scales related to falls prevention. The survey also asked demographic questions, such as gender, age and graduation year. The scores of the students showed significant improvements compared to those obtained before the intervention. This indicates that the group had a greater understanding and confidence in tackling the topic. Further analysis also revealed differences between subgroups according to the year of graduation, but overall improvements were seen in all categories. This suggests that successful implementation techniques could be desirable results for any situation. Nurse educators are advised to include strategies that focus on falls prevention in their education programs so as to make sure future nurse practitioners adopt the best possible practice.
