My current listening skills and non-verbal abilities are strong. In order to listen well, I must be present and engage with the speaker. This involves making eye contact while they’re speaking as well as providing verbal cues such as occasional nods or “uh huhs” to show that I’m paying attention. On occasion, I will ask questions to get a deeper understanding of what’s being said.
When it comes to non-verbal communication, I’m aware of how my body language often conveys more than words can say. In order to convey empathy to someone when they are sharing bad news, I keep my demeanor calm and will use soothing facial expressions, such as smiling or nodding, to help express it without saying anything. When interacting with clients or colleagues, I avoid crossing my arms, which can be interpreted as an expression of hostility or defensiveness.
These skills are essential to my professional success and also personal growth. They help me understand people better and develop stronger relationships, which leads to better results in any situation.
