Discuss the work of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative on the Future of Nursing and the Institute of Medicine research that led to the IOM report, “Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.”

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative on the Future of Nursing (RWJF Committee Initiative on the Future of Nursing) was a research project in depth that explored and recommended strategies to advance nursing practice and healthcare delivery. This committee included nurses, doctors, employers, government officials, and other health care professionals. They identified the key challenges facing nursing, such as shortages of workers and training gaps. The committee also suggested a variety of ways to enhance the availability and quality of nursing care across Canada.

The Institute of Medicine’s research into this subject led to the release of a report titled “Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health” which focused on four primary areas including: 1) expanding access to care; 2) improving education; 3) increasing diversity in the profession; 4) creating effective partnerships between health providers. Report made recommendations on how to make these changes. These included promoting lifelong education opportunities for nurses. Financial incentives were also provided in order to encourage more students from diverse backgrounds into nursing schools.
