All three are interconnected when it comes time to improve patient care. PICOT acts as a frame for research, providing an outline that clearly outlines Population (P), the Intervention (I), the Comparison (C), the Outcomes (O) and the Time Frame (T). It helps to identify the questions that need to be addressed in order to come up with evidence-based answers for a problem.
Then, you can use relevant articles of research to explore further potential treatments or interventions that may help with the problem at hand. Nurses can learn more about why one course of action was successful while another failed by comparing studies.
Then, when enough data is collected, it can be combined to existing information from other sources relating to best practices. In doing so it allows nurses to develop comprehensive plans that take into account both past experiences as well as current research findings thereby enabling them deliver better quality care tailored specifically for their patients’ needs.
