The Institute of Medicine’s report has had a direct influence on nursing education and leadership in several ways. This report stresses the importance of nurses being educated on evidence-based care so that they are able to provide up-to date, best practice and standards. The report has led to many nursing programs revising the curricula in order to place more emphasis on topics that are evidence-based, including health promotion, prevention of disease, and patient care, while providing training outside traditional classrooms. In addition, the IOM’s report served as a wake-up call for nursing leaders by stressing the importance of creating a culture where nurses feel empowered to take decisions regarding their practice and get recognized for it. The IOM report has also served as a call to action for nursing leadership by outlining the importance of creating an environment where nurses are empowered to make decisions about their own practice and receive recognition for their achievements.
