War, displacement, famine: man-made disasters
This complex humanitarian crisis is both an event of local importance and one that has international implications. The conflict has led to extreme poverty, violence and displacement in the Middle Eastern region, as well as a lack of food, healthcare, or basic needs. The result has been widespread deaths and destruction, which have also been compounded with natural disasters such as the drought or COVID-19.
At the same time, this crisis also affects other nations beyond just those directly involved; countries outside the Middle East are now dealing with waves of refugees seeking asylum or better opportunities elsewhere—testing their laws/policies on immigration as well as putting strain on resources/infrastructure. The economic collateral damage is caused by the decreased trade that occurs between nations affected, and this can lead to recessions.
In general, the responses of various governments to this problem have been mixed. Some countries have decided to give additional assistance (via UNICEF), while others have prioritized stricter border controls regulations. Ultimately however—I believe more collaboration between states needs to be fostered so effective solutions can be found that ensure safety for all those impacted by this tragedy.
