How to Develop Your Personal Nursing Philosophy
- Consider your beliefs, values and past experiences. What attracted you into nursing? And what do you wish to achieve during your career?
- Consider existing nursing theories and philosophies, for example the Theory of Human Caring of Madeleine Leininger or Jean Watson’s Caring Theory. Think about how the philosophies you are considering align with your beliefs and values.
- Choose concepts you find important. You might choose to focus on patient-centered care or show compassion.
- You should write a short statement that reflects your personal beliefs and values about nursing. The statement must be memorable and brief, while reflecting personal beliefs and values.
Setting short and long term goals:
- Start by identifying areas of improvement and strengths. You can assess your capabilities and skills by using tools such as Leadership Self-Assessment and Professional Development Inventory.
- Set SMART goals that are specific, measurable and achievable. Some examples include finishing a training program, taking on leadership roles, and improving communication skills.
- Determine the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that can help you or hinder your efforts to achieve your goals. Extrinsic factors may include motivation, drive and dedication. Intrinsic influences might be your colleagues, family or financial resources.
- Create a strategy for reaching your goals. Include specific steps you plan to take, and what resources you need. It should also be flexible enough to adapt as circumstances change.
