Introduction Intimate Partner Violence, or domestic violence as it is also called, affects millions every year. The abuse can be physical, psychological, or emotional. This type of violence can be devastating to the victim and their family.
Models of care for victims of intentional violence There have been several different models developed to support and assist those who are the victim of violent intimate partners. They include:
- Medical Model – This model is based on physical injuries that the victim has sustained and offers medical treatment and care for those injuries.
- Criminal Justice Model – This model is based on the law and focuses specifically on intimate partner violence. It involves the criminal justice, the police, and the courts.
- Advocacy Model – This model is centered on giving support, resources, and information to victims. The advocates help victims navigate the criminal justice and community resources.
Substance Abuse Impact Substance Abuse can affect individuals, their families, their communities and even nations. Substance abuse may lead to mental and physical health issues, financial instabilities, problems with relationships, or legal problems. Substance abuse increases the likelihood of violence between intimate partners, since substance abuse leads to aggressive behaviors and loss of control.
Intimate Partner Violence and Substance Abuse are important public health concerns that need a collaborative and comprehensive approach. Models of care and their impact on victims of violence, substance abuse, and addiction are important to provide support and resources for individuals, families and communities.
