In my role as an advanced practice nursing in primary care I strive to be culturally competent when it comes to the way we treat our patients. This is to make sure that everyone feels respected and valued, regardless of background or belief. In addition, I place a high priority on education and prevention. This includes promoting healthy choices in lifestyle such as diet and exercise.
I believe that the patient should be at the forefront of all services, regardless of age or specialty. This involves being cognizant of any social determinants impacting someone’s health status (e.g., access to quality food sources) as well as establishing trustworthiness through clear communication, transparency and listening skills all aimed at making sure every interaction feels supportive, compassionate and respectful from start to finish.
