Teaching was challenging but rewarding. While working as a teaching assistant for a World History course at a university, I noticed that the students were very motivated. They had many questions regarding different historical periods or events which gave me an opportunity to elaborate on concepts. In addition, I was responsible for facilitating the collaborative discussions between students. To do this effectively and maintain an open dialogue with them, it often became necessary to guide my guidance in how to have constructive disagreements. Through this process, I noticed that many of the student’s viewpoints changed as they realized their peers had differing perspectives on certain issues which they hadn’t considered before. I was able to confirm my belief that learning is more effective when students are prompted to ask questions and engage in meaningful discussions with others. This was a rewarding experience to help foster these skills in the students, and watch them grow throughout the semester.
