The drug overdose problem is one of the most serious problems in health today. It affects many millions every year. When a person takes too much drug, it can cause serious injury or death. In the last couple of years, drug overdoses are on the rise. One of the main substances that is associated with overdoses are opioids. For this article, we will be focusing on young people and adolescents aged 15-24. The drug overdose death rate has increased dramatically in this group since 1999 due to factors including the increase of access to opioids and addiction disorders among peers. It is also estimated that 11 to 28 percent of people in this age group have used prescription drugs non-medically at least one time during their lives. To address the issue, specific strategies are needed. These include educating young people and adolescents on drug abuse and developing treatment plans that target opioid addiction.
