Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 was passed to eliminate disparities in the mental health and substance use benefits offered by insurers. It prohibits any restrictions, limitations, or exclusions on benefits of this type that aren’t also applicable to medical/surgical care. It also requires all insurance plans to cover mental health treatment and drug abuse treatment, if other conditions are covered.
While this Act has accomplished a great deal in terms of increasing access to much-needed resources – there is still more work that needs to be done. As an example, there are gaps when it comes down to providing adequate financial support for those that cannot afford private health insurance. In addition, advocacy efforts are needed to make sure that those with mental illnesses receive the appropriate care and recognition in our society.
MHPAEA, in the end, is a piece of important legislation that helps to combat discrimination towards individuals with psychiatric conditions while promoting awareness about proper treatment and care options. It will take continued support, both from the private and public sectors, to expand its reach and ensure that all can enjoy these essential services. This could include writing letters, taking part in protests or marches, and joining advocacy groups. Nurses can ensure their voice is heard when making important healthcare policy decisions by being an active participant in the process.
