Covid-19, a pandemic of the virus that causes Covid-19 in humans, has brought to light how structurally racism systems affect some populations more than others due to things like poverty and lack access to health care services. The CDC data shows, for example that Black/Latinx people have a significantly higher rate of death due to the coronavirus compared to White Americans. This can partly be attributed to underlying diseases that are more prevalent amongst these populations as well as cultural biases which prevent them from getting adequate healthcare.
These disparities illustrate how structural racism is deeply rooted in our society and continues to limit opportunities for marginalized groups even today; it’s essential for us to recognize these issues so we can begin taking proactive measures towards eliminating them going forward. Only then will we be able to truly create an equitable health system which provides equal levels of care regardless of someone’s background or identity.
