When I decided which college I would attend when I graduated from high school, I had an internal conflict. One hand I was accepted to a university with a good reputation that offered many learning and development opportunities. It was on the opposite side of the nation from my home, family and friends. However, I also had been accepted at a local university with much cheaper tuition that would enable me to stay near home.

After carefully weighing my options, I spoke to my family, my teachers and my mentors, asking their opinion on the best option for me based on my goals and aspirations. I realized that going to college away from home would provide me with more independence and access to resources unavailable at my local college. But this decision meant leaving behind my support system of friends and family if things didn’t work out as planned. After carefully weighing all the factors, I decided to go to the university far from home because of its reputation and potential to set me up for future success such as in graduate school or other employment opportunities.

It was a good decision in retrospect because I have gained invaluable experience from this institution. This includes internships overseas, research projects, and mentorships with industry professionals. These are things that you cannot get at other local universities where students choose a less challenging path with lower academic demands. In retrospect, it was a wise decision to take some risks in those early days. They paid off later on.
