The first culturally adapted presentation of family therapy in Pcn-531, week 1.
When adapting family-centered treatment for substance abuse disorder, it is important to take into account the factors that are specific to your ethnic group or culture.
- Values and beliefs of a cultural nature: These values and beliefs may influence the attitudes toward substance abuse and help seeking. When developing a treatment program, it is important to take into account these values and belief systems. Some cultures view addictions as personal failures, while other cultures see them as diseases.
- Families: The family structure varies across cultures. It is important to understand the structure of a family in order to deliver effective care. You may find that some cultures have extended family networks while others place greater emphasis on nuclear relationships.
- Communication styles: Different cultures have different communication styles. It is therefore important to be aware of these differences in order to engage effectively with your clients and their family.
- Discrimination and stigma: Both can cause significant obstacles to treatment of substance abuse disorders. These issues must be addressed to provide the necessary support to individuals and their families.
- Barriers to communication: It can be difficult for clients and families to communicate with each other. It may be necessary for you to provide interpretation and translation in order to make sure that the treatment is effective and accessible.
The following resources may help in adapting family-centered substance use disorder therapy to the ethnic or cultural group you select:
- Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, or SAMHSA, provides information and guidelines on how to provide culturally-responsive care. Treatment Improvement Protocol series (TIP), particularly TIP 34 & Chapter 8 provides guidelines on working with different populations.
- National Institute on Drug Abuse provides resources on treating substance abuse disorders using evidence-based treatments, as well as information on cultural competency.
- The American Psychological Association’s (APA) Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Ethnic, Linguistic, and Culturally Diverse Populations provide guidance on providing culturally responsive care.
Consider including these information in your PowerPoint presentations:
