To make the program more widely accessible, the government created a large network of service providers, including both non-government and governmental institutions such as pharmacies, hospitals and clinics, located throughout the country. To encourage private physicians to accept NHIS-eligible patients, the government provides various incentives. Furthermore, there are a number of educational initiatives designed to raise public awareness on health-related issues and encourage the use of preventive healthcare.
While the NHIS still has a long way to go, it is already proving successful at providing high quality health care services for low prices. Its success so far indicates that it may become an important part of Saudi Arabia’s overall healthcare system going forward. Similar programs will likely be implemented by other countries to lower costs, while still providing high-quality healthcare for their citizens.
