Anemia is the condition where there are not enough red blood cells, or hemoglobin. This leads to lower levels of energy and reduced oxygen transport. Anemia is divided into two types: megaloblastic and iron-deficiency. Iron-deficiency anemia is caused by lack of dietary iron or absorption issues such as those associated with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Megaloblastic blood anemia results from vitamin B12 and folate deficiency, which is often caused by malnutrition.
Both anemias have similar symptoms such as fatigue, paleness, and breathlessness during exercise. The primary difference lies in the cause—iron-deficiency anemias are typically related to diet while megaloblastic anemias are connected more closely with genetic factors that prevent adequate absorption from food sources. The treatment for each type varies according to the underlying cause. However, in general, it involves administering intravenous liquids for hydration or supplementing nutrients that are missing.
