Mental health crisis interventions and emergency mental health responses.
A psychiatric crisis is different from other crises like disasters because of its nature. When dealing with an individual who is experiencing a psychiatric crises, it’s important to first treat any medical problems that may be present in order to stabilize the patient before moving on to psychological concerns. It could be that mental health treatment or medication is required. This can take a long time.
Interventions during disasters are typically immediate response plans, where the affected area needs to be stabilised as soon as possible to minimise potential harm. In areas with damaged infrastructure, these would be things like providing water and food or setting up temporary shelters. Additionally, these interventions often require coordination between multiple agencies in order provide adequate assistance at an acceptable speed – something which is not necessary when treating psychiatric crises.
